Sonu had never imagined he would get so much attention. “There were people video-conferencing, wanting to reach out to me, to just wish me well. It was overwhelming. I tried speaking to people from each state for 15-20 minutes”

Sonu missed his parents on this special day. “I wish my mom and dad were here to see the love that I got on this special day. They would have been proud of me. They would have hugged me.”

Birthday Special: Looking back at Taapsee Pannu’s successful transition from South Cinema to Bollywood

Taapsee Pannu made her debut in the Hindi film industry with the David Dhawan directorial Chashme Baddoor that was released in 2013. On several occasions, Taapsee has revealed that she was treated like an outsider or newcomer in Bollywood in her initial years. However, by then Taapsee had done around 10 films in the South film industry and had made a mark for herself down south. But, today having completed 10 years in the entertainment industry she makes for a good case on having a successful transition from south cinema to the Hindi film industry at a time when the divide between the two was considerably wide.

On Taapsee Pannu’s birthday, here’s looking back at her successful transition from South Cinema to Bollywood

Taapsee Pannu made her acting debut with the Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam in 2010. What many are not aware of is that ahead of the release of her debut film, she was offered three more films. In the year 2011, she had as many as seven releases across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam industry. Her second film was the critically acclaimed Aadukalam which went on to win six National Awards. The film also marked her Tamil film debut. She was cast opposite Dhanush and played the role of an Anglo Indian. In the same year she debuted in Malayalam cinema with the film Doubles. The film also starred superstar Mammootty. In 2012, she had only one release with Daruvu in Telugu.

5th April 2013.... it’s been exactly 7 years ! Must say I looked like a different human being all together. And in a lot of ways I actually was. Not many people had any belief in the fact that things can go THIS far from there, not even myself. When I started acting 10 years back it felt like I was in some sort of rush to reach somewhere, but from this point onwards in 2013 I slowed down to enjoy and LIVE this journey every single day. Slow and steady was how I wanted my journey ahead and I am happy i didn’t lose patience on my way. I think what I enjoyed the most was that I was getting surprised at every single step coz things weren’t really planned nor I was following a set path. 7 years later I think I am going to continue doing the same coz as people say “chalti gaadi ka bonnet nahi kholna chahiye” ???? Today I shall raise a toast ???? and a toast ???? to this journey I am proud of ! CHEERS! #NostlagicThrowback #Chashmebaddoor #7years

A post shared by Taapsee Pannu (@taapsee) on

However, 2013 once again proved to be a game changer as she stepped into the Hindi film industry with the David Dhawan directorial Chashme Badhhoor. Two years later she made a brief appearance in the Akshay Kumar starrer Baby. Even though it was a small role, it was very impactful and later went to have a standalone movie of her character titled Naam Shabana. However, it was her performance in the 2016 film Pink that had many take notice of her and from there one there was no turning back for the actress.

However, her time in the South Indian film industry was not all happy-go-lucky. She was termed a 'bad luck' after a few films that featured her did not do well at the box office. At an event by India Today in 2019, she said, “There was a point in my career when I was called the bad luck charm in the South because there were three-four films of mine that didn't do well at the box office. I was the typical heroine who was doing three-four songs in the films and a few scenes but not important roles. Still, I was bearing the brunt of being the unlucky charm as they thought that it was me who is making these films flop back to back.”

However, despite gaining success in the Hindi film industry, Taapsee has no plans to give up on South Cinema. She makes the conscious efforts to do at least one South Indian film every year. Last year she was seen in the much appreciated film Game Over. At the  International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2019 while talking about continuing to work in the South, she said, “I have gratitude for the south industry. At no point I wanted it to look like I used it as a stepping stone for Bollywood. They taught me what basics is like - camera and acting. Now, I have learnt the language too. It will be really stupid of me to give up the market. I would continue to work in the South.”

While today the line between South cinema and Hindi film industry is thinning, that was not the case a decade ago. Even though Taapsee was around 10-15 films old by the time she stepped into Bollywood, she was treated like a newcomer or a struggler at various events. “I would go there, and I would be treated like one of those newcomers or strugglers. I was at least 15 films old, probably much more than people sitting in the front row. I did not understand. Just because I did films in the South, did that make my films less credible? I was treated like... 'You are going to be sitting in the sixth row and not the first,” the actress had revealed in an interview with an entertainment portal.

Taapsee was last seen in the film Thappad directed by Anubhav Sinha. The actress has four films that have been announced. She will be seen in Haseen Dillruba, Loop Lapeta, Rashmi Rocket, and Shabaash Mithu

Happy Birthday, Taapsee Pannu!

Rumi Jaffery on Sushant Singh Rajput’s father’s FIR

Writer-director Rumi Jaffery who was close to both Sushant Singh Rajput and Rhea Chakraborty says the latest sudden development in the case has left him stunned and shocked. “When I heard that Sushant’s father has filed an FIR in Patna against Rhea and her family, I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t sleep the whole night. Dil kehta hai yeh nahin ho sakta. But then I think of Sushant’s grieving father. He hasn’t spoken about the issue since his son’s death. Why would he suddenly speak up if it wasn’t the truth? I am very confused. I didn’t sleep the night after Sushant’s father’s FIR,” says Rumi.

Rumi Jaffery on Sushant Singh Rajput’s father’s FIR

Did Rumi ever see any tension between Sushant and Rhea? “I met them as an outsider. We spoke only about films. What goes on between a couple is known only to the two people in a relationship. I say, let the law takes it course. Let’s not speculate on Rhea’s guilt or non-guilt.”

Shekhar Suman, a vocal supporter of the campaign to get justice for Sushant says, “The development was inevitable. Things were heating up. I was sure there would be twist in the ongoing narrative. And here it is.”

Shekhar feels the Sushant case is spreading into many directions. “But the good thing is that the clamour for a CBI investigation is louder than ever. Sushant’s father’s FIR could be the first major step towards getting justice for Sushant. Beyond that, it’s too premature to say anything.”

The worst decision of Sushant Singh Rajput's life

The worst decision of Sushant Singh Rajput’s all-too-brief life was to leave Ankita Lokhande. When Sushant was dating and living-in with Ankita Lokhande he was a different person. Warm affectionate full of life and with an insatiable zest for life, Sushant was a man deeply in love and Ankita Lokhande was his guiding light.

Once when I asked him to define his feelings for Ankita Sushant said, “Ankita is the only factor in my life that makes me believe in destiny. How we catch what life throws at us is destiny. Ankita is my destiny.”

We had conversations about his future plans, and they always involved Ankita. When I would ask about their marriage plans Sushant had the same reply each time: “We are married to one another in every sense. There is nothing that a formal ceremony can change between us.”

But then the two families began to pressurize the couple to make it legal.

One day I got a call from Sushant. He was in an unusually very serious mood. “Sir, shaadi karni padegi. We are definitely getting married next year (this was in 2016). A formal ceremony is what both our families want. So we will have two weddings. One in Mumbai and the other in Indore (Ankita’s hometown).”

He was exuberant, excited, and unstoppable. Then it ended. Suddenly all plans changed. The relationship was called off. To this day, no one knows why. Sushant didn’t tell me. After Ankita left his life he began to change. He became more secretive, less enthusiastic about life. The will to seize the day had subsided.

Sushant moved on and so did Ankita…Or that’s what they seemed to believe. I believe they never stopped loving one another, that Sushant missed Ankita to his dying day. That the relationships that he shared with some women after his split with Ankita were on the rebound. Somehow Sushant never got over Ankita. He wasn’t meant to. They were a couple for keeps.

What separated them, I don’t know. I’ve heard several theories on why they separated, blaming both Ankita and Sushant. I don’t know what went wrong between them. But I do know that a little bit of patience would have weathered the storm. That if they had stayed together, as they were meant to, Sushant would not have died. He would have been with us today.

The big fatal mistake of Sushant’s life was leaving Ankita. I remember he once told me, “There are couples who are committed only to the moment. They don’t want to take responsibility for their future together. But for me there is no uncertainty. My future is with Ankita.”

Once they parted, Sushant’s future became hazy and blurred. She was his guiding light in the truest sense. Even if Sushant decided to quit in an impulsive moment, Ankita should have stayed on.

"I migrated to Mumbai to be an actor so one day I could help these migrants," says Sonu Sood

A lady who wanted to reach the beauty parlour, a child who wanted his mother to be reached to her grandmother, a man who wanted to reach a booze store…. Sonu Sood who has taken on himself the responsibility of seeing thousands of wage-earning migrants reach home, gets such strange requests on an hourly basis.

I migrated to Mumbai to be an actor so one day I could help these migrants, says Sonu Sood

Sonu Sood who turns 47 on July 30 laughs these off as part of the territory. “They are part of the whole movement. There are youngsters who want to be with their girlfriend/boyfriend…I respond to them in a light-hearted manner, to keep their spirits high. There’s a bond that I’ve formed with all these migrants. We’ve become a part of one big family.”

How does Sonu’s immediate family feel about his passion for the migrants’ home-travel? “You know I get no time to spend with my wife and sons. Once in a while my children come and hug me and grumble that I’ve no time for them. Sometimes days pass before I am able to meet them. I am constantly monitoring all the travel plans of the migrants. I don’t even have time to look at my family. But they are my biggest support system. They know the importance of what I am doing. That every hour lost probably means a hundred more migrants unable to get home.”

Does Sonu feel morally obligated to get these migrants home?

He thinks over that question and then replies gently, “It’s a promise from me to take them home. They (the migrants) trust me. They depend on me to reach them to their homes. If they are all set to walk or cycle to their homes thousands of miles away, and if I tell them to wait a day or two so I can arrange for their travel, they stay back. It then becomes my responsibility to get the necessary permissions and see to it that they get to their loved ones. So yes, it’s a responsibility. But I am more than up to it.”

The sense of satisfaction that comes to Sonu from helping these distressed migrants is beyond words. “I’ve been a part of the film industry for twenty years and done about a 100 films. But nothing I’ve done so far has given me this kind of inner peace and satisfaction. I now feel that I migrated to Mumbai to be an actor so one day I could help these migrants. I feel this was something I was born to do. I feel blessed that God has chosen me for this mission.”

Sonu never thought he would one day be part of such a massive migratory movement. “Thousands of people walking with little kids and elders …I never thought I’d see this in my life. When it happened I couldn’t sit at home making videos and discussing digital content. I wanted to come forward and hold the hands of these distressed migrants and tell them, ‘Boss, you are not alone, we are with you. You build our homes offices roads and you are the heartbeats of our country and there’s no way I can let you down’. I promised them I’d do my best to see them reach home.”

What are the strangest travel requests Sonu has received? “Well, there was a man who wanted me to reach him to a booze shop. I told that was not possible but if after downing several drinks he needed help to return home I could look into that. Then there was a couple grumbling they can’t stay locked down together anymore. I suggested they take a trip to Goa together after the lockdown…I think that’s what my wife and I need to do after this is over.”

From missing Rs. 15 cr, to having him framed, Sushant Singh Rajput's father alleges Rhea Chakraborty is responsible for Sushant's death

Over a month after the sad and sudden demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, the late actor’s father filed an FIR in Patna against Rhea Chakraborty and five others alleging that the actress was not only responsible but was also the cause of his son’s death. Bearing in mind the sentimentality of this case, we at Bollywood Hungama managed to get a copy of the FIR that lists all the allegations made by Sushant’s father; here’s a list of the same:

From missing Rs. 15 cr, to having him framed, Sushant Singh Rajput's father alleges Rhea Chakraborty is responsible for Sushant's death

- Over a period of one year Rs. 15 cr was transferred from Sushant Singh Rajput’s account to other accounts

- Rhea Chakraborty and her family had taken over operation of Sushant Singh Rajput’s bank accounts, credit card and personal staff

- Rhea apparently made use of Sushant’s credit card while on a European holiday

- Prior to 2019 and Rhea entering Sushant’s life, the late actor had no issues of mental health

- A no-objection certificate from the late actor’s family was not sought before commencing his treatment

- When matters worsened, Rhea apparently walked with Sushant’s cash and jewellery

- Rhea overdosed the late actor, and had shifted him out of his flat and into a resort near the airport

- She apparently threatened to make public Sushant’s medical records about his mental health

- Rhea and her family had apparently convinced Sushant that his house was haunted, and that it was affecting him

- Rhea and family had apparently taken possession of Sushant’s phone and allowed him to speak to his family sparingly

"She has the right to have an opinion and so do I. Just because my opinion doesn't match hers doesn't make me inferior" - Taapsee Pannu

Kangana Ranaut thinks you are gung-ho about Karan Johar in the hope of getting roles from him?
I don’t have any film of mine which is produced by any of these gangs she keeps targeting. I never mentioned anywhere I like Karan Johar or anyone she alleges, but I have never said I hate them either.

"She has the right to have an opinion and so do I. Just because my opinion doesn't match hers doesn't make me inferior" - Taapsee Pannu

Maybe the fact that you don’t hate Karan bothers Kangana?
So the fact that I don’t hate someone she hates, is equivalent to concluding that I like that person and I suck up to that person? I don’t even know him beyond formal hi hellos and thank yous. How is this even logical?

Kangana thinks Karan Johar should offer you films?
I have been doing at least four films per year during the last three years and I have five forthcoming projects right now. Who says I don’t get enough work? I decided to keep my career graph slow and steady and that’s exactly how it’s been going.

She thinks you are sucking up to Johar in the hope of getting offers?
When none of my past films are produced by any of that so-called mafia she keeps mentioning nor any of my future films are from them how is my professional existence dependent on nepotism? Or undermining someone’s genuine achievements by crediting wrong sources and then mocking it is how you prove that you are a truly successful outsider?

Doesn’t her endless tirade anger you?
I refuse to be bitter. I refuse to take advantage of someone’s death for personal vendetta and I refuse to make a mockery out of the industry that gives me bread butter and my identity. I have had my share of struggles and just because I don’t glorify them and deal with them with a positive outlook doesn’t make me any less of the ‘outsider’.

Have you never been treated unfairly by producers for being an outsider?
Yes. I’ve been dropped out of films and replaced with star-kids. But the fact that she and her sister try to discredit me and my hard work, call me names, put wrong allegations on me is actually an equal level of harassment, if not more.

Interestingly, you have a sister who stays completely out of the industry?
Yes. All this mocking because I refuse to sing her (Kangana’s) tune and because I refuse to see her as the flag bearer for outsiders. Sorry, we outsiders all are not bitter people. We all have had good and bad experiences. But a lot of us outsiders in the film industry refuse to let negativity drive us. It’s our positivity hope and the ability to make lemonade out of the lemons thrown at us that has gotten us to where we are.

You don’t sound bitter or angry or retaliatory?
I am not going to give into this negativity and hatred because this limits my growth as a human being. She (Kangana) has the right to have an opinion and so do I. Just because my opinion doesn’t match hers doesn’t make me inferior.

In an Instagram post, Kher said that while studying at National School Of Drama, he wrote the film names like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver on paper. Sharing a black-and-white picture with De Niro, Kher wrote, “Story of this pic: There won’t be a single actor in the world, aspiring or established, who won’t be an ardent fan of this phenomenal legendary actor #RobertDeNiro. As a drama school student I had done a special paper on two of his earlier films Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. Never in my wildest dreams had I ever thought way back in 1977 that one day I will get an opportunity of not only working with him in #SilverLiningPlaybook but will also have the good fortune of calling him my friend.”

The photo was taken at De Niro’s New York apartment by David O’Russell who directed Silver Linings Playbook. “This picture was shot in his apartment in New York by #DavidORussell, director of SLP. As always I had requested for a picture and as always he was obliging. At that moment I thought it will be cool to point my finger in appreciation towards the legend in the picture. And then in almost slow motion I saw his hand going up and pointing his finger towards me in the similar manner. Miraculously David clicked the picture at that very moment. And I registered my name in the history with this pic. For me this will always be my most priceless possession.
