Mahesh Bhatt owes Alia Bhatt an apology for pulling the pathetic stunt on her with Sadak 2

Why did Mahesh Bhatt return to direction after 22 years to make the film as deplorable as Sadak 2, and that to direct his superstar-daughter, Alia Bhatt, for the first time? We will never know.  Sadly he has also affected Alia’s career.

Mahesh Bhatt owes Alia Bhatt an apology for pulling the pathetic stunt on her with Sadak 2

Already reeling under the impact of the raging nepotism debate, the sheer shoddiness of Sadak 2 is likely to make a very big impact on Alia’s next release Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Many in the know feel Sadak 2 has taken Alia’s career down by many notches. Many of Alia’s closest well-wishers including Karan Johar are secretly wondering how Mahesh Bhatt could pull this pathetic stunt on his daughter.

Not that Bhansali is overly worried. “Alia has given the performance of a lifetime in Gangubai Kathiawadi and SLB knows it. He’s pretty sure the whole nepotism debate and the impact of Sadak 2 will be considerably reduced by the time his film releases,” says a source close to Bhansali.

But we do feel Mahesh Bhatt owes his daughter an apology.

“If the same script had been offered to her by any other director Alia would have turned it down without a second thought. The fact that she did Sadak 2 for her father shows how much faith she, and for that matter poor Aditya Roy Kapur, had in Mahesh Bhatt. He has let both of them down very badly,” says a prominent filmmaker who is very close to both actors.

Radhika Apte more visible in her international film than Ali Fazal

Two of our more talented actors Radhika Apte and Ali Fazal will be seen in prestigious international films at just about the same time. While Ali Fazal in the trailer of Death On The Nile is visible for just one shot amidst a gallery of outstanding co-stars, Radhika Apte is all over the trailer of A Call To Spy, and understandably so. Ms Apte plays one of the three protagonists in this chick flick with a difference.

Radhika Apte more visible in her international film than Ali Fazal

Apte along with two very distinguished actresses Sarah Megan Thomas and Stana Katic, plays a part of Winston Churchill’s secret service to spy on Hitler during World War 2. In the tense espionage thriller Ms Apte plays Noor Inayat Khan a true-life spy who like Alia Bhatt’s Sehmat in Raazi is willing to risk her life for her country. In this case the country is Great Britain.

The trailer is heartening for the space it provides to an Indian actress. Also, I am relieved to hear speaking in her natural voice and not in that sing-song tone assumed by all Indian actors working abroad. Ms Apte holds her ground well with her distinguished co-stars who include the British actor Linus Roache (wasn’t he wonderful as Robert Kennedy in RFK?), and the Canadian Stana Katic.

Sara Megan Thomas who plays the third protagonist also produces the film. The director of the film is also a woman. To have all these talented women get together for a spy thriller sounds like fun. Just how much so, we shall know in September

16 Years Of Dhoom: "We were confident at the script stage that Dhoom was an entertainer" - says Vijay Krishna Acharya

Filmmaker Vijay Krishna Acharya is really in a league of his own and here’s why! The writer-director has written and directed the most successful franchise in the Indian film industry’s history – the Dhoom series of adrenaline-pumping films. Viktor, as he is lovingly called in the industry, says his achievements are hugely humbling for him. He reveals that he and Aditya Chopra, the producer of the film, were ‘pleasantly surprised’ with the mind-blowing reaction of the audience towards the first film that spawned the generation-defining franchise for audiences worldwide.

Viktor, who wrote the first two films before directing Aamir Khan in Dhoom: 3, says, “Honestly, as a writer, one always looks for appreciation, and I’m often unaware of the commercial aspect of things. I think all films are creative enterprises first and commerce is a by-product of that. But I think we were all pleasantly surprised by the response to the film (the first Dhoom).”

He adds, “We were confident at the script stage that the film was an entertainer, a film which was not taking itself too seriously and perhaps that is what struck a chord with the young in the audience along with the energy of the action and of course Dhoom Macha Le by Pritam! The only person who kind of foresaw the possibility of a sequel was Adi and he wrote me a mail before the release and said, do think about a sequel!”

With Dhoom’s anniversary, Viktor completes 16 years of association with YRF and Aditya Chopra. About his creative collaboration with the studio, he says, “To me, it seems like yesterday honestly. For me, it has always been about the people that I met and the relationships we forged. From the time of writing the first Dhoom, I have found in Adi a great generator and bouncing board for ideas. He is genuinely a creative producer and since he’s a writer and a director himself he understands the struggle of the creative process and the support that a director needs to bring that imagination to life. In a world which is seen as cut-throat and competitive, he has managed to create an oasis of calm.”

Viktor’s idea to have a villain with morality was ingenious because one always roots for the villain to win! He says, “Dhoom is more in an anti-hero world rather than a villain in the traditional sense. In the first Dhoom, the anti-hero is a rebel. Even though he is a thief, his persona is essentially a rebellious one. There is something about youth and bikes and energy, none of which was a planned thing— it just seemed to come organically, instinctively I guess and the bank robbers are essentially cocking a snook at the establishment which unconsciously is a thread that runs through in all the films of the Dhoom series.”

He adds, “The hero is the anti-hero and he is always stepping away from the world of conventional wisdom and rules. He exists outside of it (Dhoom 2) even though he is very much a part of the fabric of society, like Kabir in Dhoom and Sahir in Dhoom 3. The larger than life aspect comes from their exceptional abilities to face and oftentimes create danger for their lives.”

Ask Viktor if directing a Dhoom franchise film is now a pleasure or pressure point for him because of the soaring expectations and he says, “Filmmaking is a healthy and sometimes unhealthy combination of pleasure and pressure. An almost symbiotic existence which like all things dangerous has a unique attraction and thrill.

So, yes, it will always be a pleasure but I’m also aware that it will get tougher with each film to reinvent or rediscover the genre. Having said that, I remember what Adi said once while we were scripting Dhoom 2 that we should never make a Dhoom only to satisfy the franchise. One should make it only if we would have made that film in any event, whether or not it was called Dhoom. So far, I think, we have managed to stick to that principle.”

FIRST LOOK: John Abraham and Aditi Rao Hydari to play Arjun Kapoor's grandparents in untitled next

To be one of the very first few films to resume shoot post the lockdown, the 10-day shoot of Arjun Kapoor- Rakul Preet starrer yet untitled took off on Monday. To start the schedule are John Abraham and Aditi Rao Hydari, who play Arjun’s grandparents in the film. Their track is set in 1947, around the time of India’s Independence.

FIRST LOOK: John Abraham and Aditi Rao Hydari to play Arjun Kapoor's grandparents in untitled next

Aditi plays John’s love interest and the younger version of Neena’s character, Arjun’s grandmother. John and Aditi will be shooting for their part for a week during this indoor schedule. They will then reunite with the team for a brief outdoor in October.

John is excited to get back to work after a five-month forced break due to the coronavirus triggered lockdown, but is also cautious given that we are still in the midst of a pandemic. “The team has taken extreme care, following all the SOPs, issued by the ministries and the concerned authorities. As a producer, it’s important for me to look out for our cast and crew,” he says. John, who is producing the film with Nikkhil Advani and Bhushan Kumar says, “When I heard the script, I instantly knew that this would be a special part, and when Kaashvie suggested I play it, it was difficult to refuse.”

Aditi insists that the role is equally special for her as it is a love story that spans generations. “John and I play a couple in 1946 –47 whose love story remains unfinished and unrequited till Arjun’s character feels the need to bring it to closure. Films like these are rarely made today, so I was quick to come on board,” she avers.

Nikkhil comments that it’s a love story spanning three-generation, starting in 1947 and continuing till 2020. “There is a parallel between Arjun and Rakul’s characters in the present day and the forced break-up between John and Aditi’s characters in 1947 following the Partition. He plays a Sardar for the first time,” he shares.

Bhushan promises that John in his Sikh avatar is powerful and lovable and his chemistry will light up the screen. “It’s a story of love, values, bonds and family over two different eras. John and Aditi’s is an old-school love story while Arjun and Rakul are in a modern-day relationship,” he informs.

Nikkhil concludes by saying the film will showcase love to a generation growing up on social media: “The idea is to realise true love through the story of a woman who’s been yearning for closure for 70 years.”

The film yet untitled, directed by Kaashvie Nair, is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Divya Khosla Kumar, Krishan Kumar (T-Series) along with Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani, Nikkhil Advani (Emmay Entertainment), and John Abraham (JA Entertainment).
