EXCLUSIVE: Kabir Khan on receiving death threats from Taliban during Kabul Express shoot in Afghanistan - "That was scary, to be honest"
Filmmaker Kabir Khan was well-known for his documentary films before he ventured into feature films with Kabul Express (2006) in which he narrated what he had witnessed during his time in Afghanistan. The film starred John Abraham and Arshad Warsi. Now, it is known that the Taliban is back in Afghanistan after 20 years. In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the director shared his experiences in Afghanistan and also talked about how he and his team received death threats during the filming of Kabul Express.
"That was scary, to be honest. I mean, when it happened, it definitely was; to get death threats from the Taliban. Basically, what happened is that we started filming. We were the first film from anywhere in the world to be filming in post-Taliban, Afghanistan. And, obviously, so we became this very exotic story for international media to report on, as Afghanistan coming back normal and a Bollywood film is being shot here. So BBC, CNN, and they all did short snippets and stories on us. And obviously, the Taliban sitting across the border did not like that picture going out that everything is getting back to normal because the Taliban had even banned any form of cinema and films and photography. So then they sent out death threats to us. We were told by the Indian Ambassador that five people actually have been sent out to get our unit. So we had to obviously stop filming. Because it's not, it's not a death threat from just one some underground outfit it is, at that point in time, one of the most dreaded terrorist organizations. But, then the Afghan people that have run government really, for them, they said, 'We will give you whatever protection you want.' But for them, they really wanted us to go on, they wanted us, they didn't want us to succumb to these death threats to do what the Taliban was trying to do, which basically scare us away from Afghanistan," Kabir Khan told Bollywood Hungama.
"I often said that if it was not that kind of support, and help that I got from the people of Afghanistan, my first film would not have happened. If my first one would not have happened, maybe I would not have been a filmmaker today. So I really owe it to the people of Afghanistan. These are the people who literally stood between the Taliban and us. I feel heartbroken when some of those very people today are trying to reach out to me and asking for help to get them out of Afghanistan because some of them have been very vocal critics of the Taliban. They have been famous, they're on YouTube, they're on social media, criticizing the Taliban. They have professed their love for India and Bollywood. Some of them are actors, and they are targets. One of our friend's houses has already been ransacked, and he's gone underground with his family. We are, of course, trying to do whatever we can, it's not easy. But it's heartbreaking to see them get into this position after two decades," he added.

EXCLUSIVE: Kabir Khan - "When I see wrong politics being highlighted in films, it really makes me angry"
Filmmaker Kabir Khan kicked off his feature films career with Kabul Express (2006) in which he narrated what he had witnessed during his time in Afghanistan. The film starred John Abraham and Arshad Warsi. In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the director shared his experiences in Afghanistan, talked about the politics in his films like New York, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and more, and whether it would be difficult to make Kabul Express in the current political climate.
When asked if could make a film like his debut movie in today's time, Kabir Khan said, "I would definitely want to because that's the only way I know. I would not make compromises; I would never make compromises on my ideology, or rather not do that story, then make compromises on ideology. For me, the core of a film is the politics of the film. When I say the politics of the film, a lot of people sometimes just misunderstand that; politics is not about political outfits. Politics is the way we see anything in this world; the way we look at women in our politics; the way we look at minorities or politics; the way we look at people living on the fringes of society is politics' the way we look at the people in power is a politics and that always has to come through. No story can exist in la-la land; in a vacuum. There is a real-world there."
He further added, "So with every shot, with every note of background music, when it comes, where it comes, how close am I going to the protagonist, how far I'm going away from the scene, how am I cutting it; my politics are coming through. So that is something you have to own. For me, that's always been the most important part of a film. I can forgive bad writing, shoddy camera work, you know, sloppy editing, but I can never forgive bad politics because mainstream media films are a very powerful platform and they can really influence a lot of people. So, when I see wrong politics being highlighted [in films], it really makes me angry."
Meanwhile, on the work front, Kabir Khan will helm Ranveer Singh starter 83. The film is waiting to release in theatres.

EXCLUSIVE: Emraan Hashmi on play antagonist opposite Salman Khan in Tiger 3 - "I've never come forward and said I am doing all those things"
Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi will soon head to Russia to shoot for Salman Khan - Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger 3. While the lead actors have kicked off their schedule in Russia, Hashmi is currently in India promoting his upcoming film Chehre. Interestingly, neither Yash Raj Films nor Emraan Hashmi has confirmed that he is the antagonist in the film.
It is rumoured that his introductory scene is mounted on a huge scene with a budget of Rs. 10 crores. Keeping his news under wraps, Emraan Hashmi recently told Bollywood Hungama, "I've never come forward and said I am doing all those things."
The actor has training for the film and is bulking up. Meanwhile, when asked a question "People will love me as an antagonist against Salman Khan because?" To which, Emraan Hashmi responded, "Because I am a good actor."
The 45-day gruelling schedule filled with breath-taking action sequences will see Salman and Katrina shoot in at least 5 international destinations including Austria and Turkey. A source earlier told Bollywood Hungama, “Tiger 3’s shoot is currently taking place in the city of St Petersburg. The Russia schedule began with a grand car chase action sequence. The Indian and Russian units seemed very well prepared and also adhered to the Covid-19 safety guidelines. Also, the Russian authorities are providing complete cooperation so that the shoot takes place without any hiccups.”
The source continued, “Despite pandemic restrictions, Aditya Chopra has made it clear that there should be no compromise on the grandeur and scale of the film. The car chase sequence is also being executed keeping in mind Adi’s vision for the film. The film surely would be something to watch out for, especially on the big screen.”
Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the third installment will have a cameo from Shah Rukh Khan who is starring in YRF's Pathan.
