How locusts left Madurai barren 350 years ago

As the northern part of the country faces the worst desert locust invasion in more than 20 years with crop-destroying swarms attacking Rajasthan and now spreading to Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, authorities in the southern states assure that no such threat is imminent here. But historical references show Madurai experienced a two-day locust attack in the fag end of the 17th century which resulted in a famine for nearly three years.
