The 4th generation South Korean pop group ENHYPEN is back and well, their first comeback is nothing short of a spectacle. The group consists of seven multinational members Jungwon, Heesung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki. After making their debut with the album 'Border: Day One' last year, the group has released their second EP 'Border: Carnival' on April 26, 2021.
Fixating on supernatural elements, the music video begins with Jay, Jungwon, and Heesung waiting at a bus stop for someone to pick them up. But, one of them leaves back a blue diary which is found by a schoolgirl. She comes across an invitation card that says, "You are invited to our bloody birthday party." It further reads, “Sometimes, walking down the deadly path without fleeing from death itself can give rise to the most wondrous creation" before it ends with "we hope you will be able to come." Interestingly, two young boys are seen standing behind the girl, who turn out to be I-Land alums K and EJ (debuting in HYBE's Japanese group soon), turning into what looks like werewolves. Well, we only see their shadows.
Cut to a house party, Heesung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki get together to celebrate Jungwon's birthday and well, it turns out to be a house full of students having a gala time while surrounded by what seems like a page right from fiction books. For instance, the septet might be Vampires beefing with werewolves K and EJ (The Vampire Diaries, anyone? Salvatores vs Mikaelsons?). As the scenes go back and forth between the dance scenes and them enjoying the party, you witness Sunoo in a room collecting his blood in a glass. Once again, you witness scenes back and forth between a room filled with blood, the septet grooving, and back to the room as Sunghoon is covered in blood as he dances in the red rain. It ends with all seven of them sitting at a table celebrating Jungwon's birthday.
Well, cinematically, this is one of the best music videos to come out of the Korean pop industry, this year. 'Drunk-Dazed' is an impressive pop-rock track that enthralls with its energetic beats. The music video unfolds the dark atmosphere that gradually darkens and creates a very hazy and chaotic - almost dizzy feeling. It encapsulates the emotion of dizziness as the septet compares it to the world of music and fame which is unfamiliar and chaotic. The lyrics reflect the sentiment, "I feel it, my head's in a daze, daze, daze / I'm addicted, I replay, play, play / The way you want it / Go as far as you can to reach it / Trapped in the carnival wow, wow / My heart’s again in a daze, daze, daze / Can't control my body dance, dance, dance / This sweet scent / Fangs glowing red / Revel in it, this carnival wow, wow."
Wonderkid and Bang Si Hyuk participated in creating the pop-rock track 'Drunk Dazed' with an 808-based rocking feel. ENHYPEN makes a stunning comeback with probably trippy music of the year. Trippy - in the best way possible. The music video is hypnotic, as the darkness grows, the energy level rises, the choreography is super fierce and compelling as it builds an atmosphere of curiosity. The vocal harmonies with fine choreography keypoints especially the signature steps and red rain dance totally bring the enigmatic flavor. The six-track EP is totally worth the hype.
ENHYPEN is the first boyband created by Belift Lab, a joint venture between Big Hit Entertainment and CJ ENM. They were the finalists of the global music competition show I-Land, which finished airing in September 2020. Similar to the ‘hyphen(-)’ that connects one word to another, ENHYPEN means that seven different boys connect to discover one another and grow together. It also indicates their ambitious plan to connect people and the world through their music.
The debut album 'Border: Day One' comprised of six tracks overarching various topics including 'Intro: Walk the Line', lead single 'Given-Taken', 'Let Me In (20 CUBE)', '10 Months', 'Flicker', and 'Outro: Cross the Line'.
