EXCLUSIVE: "I've seen patriarchy when I was growing up but never gender inequality" - says Parineeti Chopra

Actress Parineeti Chopra, who had kicked off with a successful career in Bollywood had two major releases this year namely The Girl On The Train released in February 2021 and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, also starring Arjun Kapoor, released in March 2021.

Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar initially released on theatres and cinema halls but was suspended owing to the rising spike in Covid-19 cases. The film is now made available online to watch and is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The film has been acclaimed and lauded by both critics and the audience.

Now, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Parineeti Chopra talks about her film Sandeep And Pinky Farar and the positive response she's been getting for the film. She also talked about patriarchy and the gender inequality she saw in the industry.

When asked how important it is for her as a woman to do a film that shows the vulnerability of a woman and strength both at the same time.

To which replied, "I have grown up in a house where there was never any gender inequality. I have two younger brothers, but they were equal and even more opportunities were given to me than my brothers. So, this concept of gender inequality I heard for the first time when I came to Bombay and even realised Oh! women can be paid differently. Oh! women are lesser than me. Oh! lalala. I have seen patriarchy when I was growing up but never gender inequality. Even in my normal life, the off-screen life if anybody says to me that you are a girl that's why you can't do this and the boy can do it, I immediately retaliate. I immediately try to change that thinking."

The actress later added "So even in scripts automatically, if a character or something happens where there is some sort of unfairness to a woman, I get very attracted to it immediately. Because I feel like this has to been spoken. People need to change this and we as actors in films can be very influential in changing thinking positively or negatively. So, if we can have a positive message, I am not saying that I am only going to do social messages, No. But, I am saying if there is a chance to do it smartly, I would love to be a part of that narrative. I myself have started experiencing it only 10 years ago and I feel it's bizarre. It shouldn't exist in society. If I can do it, as a woman If I can change that thought, I would consider my career very successful."
