Verification mandatory before issuing lawyers’ licence: HC

The Allahabad high court has directed the bar council of UP to implement a process requiring a police verification report before granting a licence to practice law, stressing that this would prevent people with criminal histories from becoming lawyers by concealing information during the application process. The court asked the state government and the bar council to issue necessary instructions to ensure that police reports are obtained for all pending and new licence applications, similar to the process followed for passport issuance.
